The note that changed everything
This is a story about a list.
A couple of months ago, feeling restless (and to be honest, feeling lonely) I logged in at 7am for another day working from home. At coffee time I opened Notes on my phone and, I don't know why, but I jotted down what I wanted from my next job.
It said:
1. A team.
As much as working from home is a huge perk, I need to be around people. I was tired of not laughing.
2. To never have my morning alarm herald that sinking feeling.
3. To write. Creatively. And sometimes even collaboratively.
4. To meet interesting people and feel appreciated (yes for my hilarious jokes but more than that, for what I can do as a writer.)
5. To feel my efforts and ability to harbour enormous passion for things was being valued and rewarded.
6. And basically somehow, I needed all this to fit around being able to collect my two children from school and hang up a lot of washing.
That was it. I wrote it a month ago. And while I wasn’t sure what the job was, I tried really hard to pretend I had magical powers.
Anyway, it worked.
New girl alert! I’ve now said goodbye to the glitz of being TV writer and joined the glamour of KUCO as a copywriter! I’ll now be immersing myself in café, restaurant and hotel culture with a team that really is how I always thought it looked.
Having spent an entire year working exclusively from home, alone, in my pyjamas, with just an energy-saving lightbulb to talk to, today I wore actual clothes and worked at a table, with a team, next to a huge window.
Writing can be a strange beast. Anyone who writes for living will know it can be lonely and frustrating at times so I’m thrilled to have been welcomed into this team.
I'm Emily Martin - that's me on the right! I’ll be popping up on here sharing client news, professional ponderings and industry insights. And you can reach me through the KUCO website or via emilyincam on Instagram and Twitter.
